1. I am Barack Obama, President of the United States -- AMA

Hi, I’m Barack Obama, President of the United States. Ask me anything. I’ll be taking your questions for half an hour starting at about 4:30 ET.

Proof it's me: https://twitter.com/BarackObama/status/240903767350968320

We're running early and will get started soon.

UPDATE: Hey everybody - this is barack. Just finished a great rally in Charlottesville, and am looking forward to your questions. At the top, I do want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with folks who are dealing with Hurricane Isaac in the Gulf, and to let them know that we are going to be coordinating with state and local officials to make sure that we give families everything they need to recover.

LAST UPDATE: I need to get going so I'm back in DC in time for dinner. But I want to thank everybody at reddit for participating - this is an example of how technology and the internet can empower the sorts of conversations that strengthen our democracy over the long run. AND REMEMBER TO VOTE IN NOVEMBER - if you need to know how to register, go to http://gottaregister.com. By the way, if you want to know what I think about this whole reddit experience - NOT BAD!

3. I’m American citizen, undecided voter, loving husband Ken Bone, Welcome to the Bone Zone! AMA

Hello Reddit,

I’m just a normal guy, who spends his free time with his hot wife and cat in St. Louis. I didn’t see any of this coming, it’s been a crazy week. I want to make something good come out of this moment, so I’m donating a portion of the proceeds from my Represent T-Shirt campaign to the St. Patrick Center raising money to fight homelessness in St. Louis.

I’m an open book doing this AMA at my desk at work and excited to answer America’s question.

Please support the campaign and the fight on homelessness! Represent.com/bonezone

Edit: signing off now, just like my whole experience so far this has been overwhelmingly positive! Special thanks to my Reddit brethren for sticking up for me when the few negative people attack. Let's just show that we're better than that by not answering hate with hate. Maybe do this again in a few weeks when the ride is over if you have questions about returning to normal.

My client will be answering no further questions.

NEW EDIT: This post is about to be locked, but questions are still coming in. I made a new AMA to keep this going. You can find it here!

5. I’m Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Ask Me Anything.

I’m excited to be back for my fifth AMA.

Melinda and I recently published our latest Annual Letter: http://www.gatesletter.com.

This year it’s addressed to our dear friend Warren Buffett, who donated the bulk of his fortune to our foundation in 2006. In the letter we tell Warren about the impact his amazing gift has had on the world.

My idea for a David Pumpkins sequel at Saturday Night Live didn't make the cut last Christmas, but I thought it deserved a second chance: https://youtu.be/56dRczBgMiA.

9. I am Gordon Ramsay. AMA.

Hello reddit.

Gordon Ramsay here. This is my first time doing a reddit AMA, and I'm looking forward to answering as many of your questions as time permits this morning (with assistance from Victoria from reddit).

This week we are celebrating a milestone, I'm taping my 500th episode (#ramsay500) for FOX prime time!

About me: I'm an award-winning chef and restaurateur with 25 restaurants worldwide (http://www.gordonramsay.com/). Also known for presenting television programs, including Hell's Kitchen, MasterChef, MasterChef Junior, Hotel Hell and Kitchen Nightmares.

Update First of all, I'd like to say thank you.

And never trust a fat chef, because they've eaten all the good bits.

And I've really enjoyed myself, it's been a fucking blast. And I promise you, I won't wait as long to do this again next time. Because it's fucking great!

10. I was Goofy at Walt Disney World for over 20 years! AMA! (This post is not for those who wish to preserve the Disney Magic)

If you'd like to preserve the magical guest experience at the Disney theme parks I suggest you stop reading now. Hi there! this is me and it's nice to meet you. I worked at Walt Disney World for over twenty-five years! I was a Bandit, Gangster and Tour Guide at the Great Movie Ride, sold merchandise in a few stores, worked in Guest Services at the Polynesian (couldn't find any pics) then Guest Relations as a Tour Guide but in 1996 I transferred to the Character department and I never looked back! I know you guys are big on proof so look at this then look at this. Oh, here's some MEGA proof. Just for fun, here's a pic of me teaching the "official" Disney Princess Wave and playing before parade, me in the Mickey Mania Parade and here's me in the airport bringing in a plane for a press event!

I'll answer any questions you might have unless they get too personal or weird (I know reddit) so go ahead! Ask Me Anything!

Edit: Before this post gets archived I want to thank the Reddit community for giving me so much support and encouragement. I am truly honored to be among you. I'm truly touched by all of the gold you gave me for this comment. I'm glad you liked that story. Above all, I sincerely want to thank you for what you did for the Florida Hospital. It was truly inspirational and it brought me so much joy. Now, as Mickey would say, "See ya real soon!"

11. "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey here, AMA!

Ronda here. My favorite Pokemon is Mew and I used to moderate a Pokemon forum. I'm an active player on WOW and a Mage named Randa on TaichiPanda – I’m on the 3rd Game Of Thrones book and will shank a bitch who tries to give shit away about the series cause you watched the show already.

Oh, and I'm also the UFC Bantamweight Champion and undefeated in MMA. I'm here today to answer your questions with the help of my friends Bobby and Leo.

As many of you already know, I get a lot of questions about femininity and body image. Women are constantly being made to feel the need to conform to an almost unattainable standard of what’s considered attractive so they can support a multitude of industries buying shit in the pursuit of reaching this standard.

So, I've decided to expand my support of the charity Didi Hirsch with their work in the field of women's body issues, and have partnered with Represent.com to release a limited edition "don't be a D.N.B." shirt, with a portion of proceeds benefiting this amazing cause. (For those of you who don't know- a "D.N.B." is a "Do Nothing Bitch")

I'll be answering your questions for the next ~34 seconds, so I'll have plenty of time for 50+ thoughtful answers. AMA!

EDIT: Thanks so much for the awesome questions! Gotta head out now, but it's been real, its been fun....its been real fun - thanks reddit!

13. President Trump has threatened national monuments, resumed Arctic drilling, and approved the Dakota Access pipeline. I’m an environmental lawyer taking him to court. AMA!

Greetings from Earthjustice, reddit! You might remember my colleagues Greg, Marjorie, and Tim from previous AMAs on protecting bees and wolves. Earthjustice is a public interest law firm that uses the power of the courts to safeguard Americans’ air, water, health, wild places, and wild species.

We’re very busy. Donald Trump has tried to do more harm to the environment in his first 100 days than any other president in history. The New York Times recently published a list of 23 environmental rules the Trump administration has attempted to roll back, including limits on greenhouse gas emissions, new standards for energy efficiency, and even a regulation that stopped coal companies from dumping untreated waste into mountain streams.

Earthjustice has filed a steady stream of lawsuits against Trump. So far, we’ve filed or are preparing litigation to stop the administration from, among other things:

My specialty is defending our country’s wildlands, oceans, and wildlife in court from fossil fuel extraction, over-fishing, habitat loss, and other threats. Ask me about how our team plans to counter Trump’s anti-environment agenda, which flies in the face of the needs and wants of voters. Almost 75 percent of Americans, including 6 in 10 Trump voters, support regulating climate changing pollution.

If you feel moved to support Earthjustice’s work, please consider taking action for one of our causes or making a donation. We’re entirely non-profit, so public contributions pay our salaries.

Proof, and for comparison, more proof. I’ll be answering questions live starting at 12:30 p.m. Pacific/3:30 p.m. Eastern. Ask me anything!

EDIT: We're still live - I just had to grab some lunch. I'm back and answering more questions.

EDIT: Front page! Thank you so much reddit! And thank you for the gold. Since I'm not a regular redditor, please consider spending your hard-earned money by donating directly to Earthjustice here.

EDIT: Thank you so much for this engaging discussion reddit! Have a great evening, and thank you again for your support.

14. We are the ACLU. Ask Us Anything about net neutrality!

TAKE ACTION HERE: https://www.aclu.org/net-neutralityAMA

Today a diverse coalition of interested parties including the ACLU, Amazon, Etsy, Mozilla, Kickstarter, and many others came together to sound the alarm about the Federal Communications Commission’s attack on net neutrality. A free and open internet is vital for our democracy and for our daily lives. But the FCC is considering a proposal that threatens net neutrality — and therefore the internet as we know it.

“Network neutrality” is based on a simple premise: that the company that provides your Internet connection can't interfere with how you communicate over that connection. An Internet carrier’s job is to deliver data from its origin to its destination — not to block, slow down, or de-prioritize information because they don't like its content.

15. We're NASA scientists & exoplanet experts. Ask us anything about today's announcement of seven Earth-size planets orbiting TRAPPIST-1!

Today, Feb. 22, 2017, NASA announced the first known system of seven Earth-size planets around a single star. Three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water.

NASA TRAPPIST-1 News Briefing (recording) http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/100200725 For more info about the discovery, visit https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/trappist1/

This discovery sets a new record for greatest number of habitable-zone planets found around a single star outside our solar system. All of these seven planets could have liquid water – key to life as we know it – under the right atmospheric conditions, but the chances are highest with the three in the habitable zone.

At about 40 light-years (235 trillion miles) from Earth, the system of planets is relatively close to us, in the constellation Aquarius. Because they are located outside of our solar system, these planets are scientifically known as exoplanets.

We're a group of experts here to answer your questions about the discovery, NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, and our search for life beyond Earth. Please post your questions here. We'll be online from 3-5 p.m. EST (noon-2 p.m. PST, 20:00-22:00 UTC), and will sign our answers. Ask us anything!

UPDATE (5:02 p.m. EST): That's all the time we have for today. Thanks so much for all your great questions. Get more exoplanet news as it happens from http://twitter.com/PlanetQuest and https://exoplanets.nasa.gov

16. Oh look. It’s that CISA surveillance bill again. Didn’t we defeat that? Not yet. One last chance (for real) to #StopCISA. Ask activists from Fight for the Future, Access, EFF, and Demand Progress anything about CISA.

The Senate is about to vote on a bill to reward companies that hand over your data to the NSA. We’re privacy advocates trying to stop it. Join us and call your lawmaker to vote no on the bill: https://stopcyberspying.com and https://decidethefuture.org

The reason you keep hearing about these bills is that we keep beating them. The other side has full time lobbyists pushing them every single day. We have you. But together, we keep winning.

With your help, we've stopped CISA, the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act, and other "cybersecurity" bills for years; however, they keep on coming back. Last week, the Senate scheduled CISA for a final vote TOMORROW. We've been here before. And you already know the bill is a surveillance bill in disguise.

People have sent millions of faxes (you read that right) to Congress, tweeted at senators, sent emails, and made calls. Over 50 organizations and companies oppose the bill including Access, ACLU, EFF, FFTF, Apple, Yelp, Twitter, and Wikimedia.

Fortunately, CISA isn’t law yet, but it will have its final Senate vote this week and we need a dozen more senators to vote against it. Two things you can do right now:

Or just call this and we can connect you: 1-985-222-CISA

UPDATE: Our special guest and leading privacy advocate, Senator Wyden has joined the AMA. Please ask him questions! Here's the proof.

UPDATE 2(7:45 pm ET): Senator Wyden is now gone.

Answering questions today are: JaycoxEFF, nadia_k, NathanDavidWhite, fightforthefuture, evanfftf, astepanovich, DrewAccess, DSchuma.

Proof it's us: EFF, Access, Fight for the Future, FFTF here also, Demand Progress

You can read about why the bill is dangerous here. You can also find out more in this detailed chart (.pdf) comparing CISA to other bad cybersecurity bills.

Read the actual bill text here.

17. I quit my job at EA, where I worked on Burnout, sold my house and started an indie games studio with three friends. Tomorrow we release our next game. AMA!

Hello Reddit! I’m Sean Murray, and I’m one part of a small indie dev called Hello Games.

I joined the industry straight out of Uni, worked for three years, became a technical director, lost my way, quit and made a game with my friends. That was Joe Danger. Tomorrow we're releasing our next game called No Man's Sky.

You can read about it here: http://www.no-mans-sky.com/2016/08/what-do-you-do-in-no-mans-sky/

It's a chill sci-fi game.

I can’t really describe in words what today feels like... but let's go with weird and terrifying.

My specialist subjects are programming, indie development, working at EA, not sleeping, maths, hype-trains, drinking tea and stressing about your game releasing... Ask Me Anything!

Proof here… https://twitter.com/NoMansSky/status/762769098614923265

EDIT! Thank you everyone! I'm gonna do another half hour and then try to get some sleep :)

EDIT! Leaving now because people pointed out we might overtake Obama as the most popular AMA. If that happens someone might start to worry that the hype has gone too far ¯\(シ)/¯ - thank you all so much! Hope you enjoy the game, I'm going to try to sneak off into anonymity now

19. Hi Reddit, I’m Bill Gates and I’m back for my third AMA. Ask me anything.

I’m back for my third AMA. I’m happy to talk about anything. Philanthropy, technology, what it’s like to drink water made from human waste... (Short answer: Just like drinking any other kind of water, except that people get a little freaked out by the whole idea.)

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to look at the annual letter that Melinda and I just published (gatesletter.com). This year we make the case that in the next 15 years, life will improve faster for people in poor countries than it ever has before.

21. I am Buzz Aldrin, engineer, American astronaut, and the second person to walk on the moon during the Apollo 11 moon landing. AMA!

I am hoping to be designated a lunar ambassador along with all the 24 living or deceased crews who have reached the moon. In the meantime, I like to be known as a global space statesman.

This July 20th is the 45th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Everywhere in the world that I visit, people tell me stories of where they were the day that Neil Armstrong and I walked on the moon.

Today, we are launching a social media campaign which includes a YouTube Channel, #Apollo45. This is a channel where you can share your story, your parents', your grandparents', or your friends' stories of that moment and how it inspires you, with me and everyone else who will be watching.

I do hope you consider joining in. Please follow along at youtube.com/Apollo45.

Victoria from reddit will be assisting me today. Ask me anything.

Edit: Be careful what you dream of, it just may happen to you. Anyone who dreams of something, has to be prepared. Thank you!

25. United Airlines sued me last year for creating Skiplagged, a site that saves consumers money on airfare by exposing secrets. Instead of shutting it down, United made Skiplagged go viral worldwide and supporters donated over $80,000! Today, there's no lawsuit and Skiplagged is still marching on. AMA

Update: reddit hug of death, try the Android or iOS apps if website fails <3 . We're also hiring, particularly engineers to make Skiplagged better. Email apply@skiplagged.com if you're interested.

This is a followup to the AMA I did last year, just after the federal lawsuit was filed.

Hey guys, I founded Skiplagged. Skiplagged is like a regular airfare search engine except it also shows you fares other websites don't. Among those is something very controversial known as hidden-city.

Basically, hidden-city is where your destination is a stopover; you'd simply leave the airport when you arrive at your destination. It turns out booking this way can save you hundreds of dollars on over 25% of common routes, especially in the USA. New York to San Francisco example. There are a few caveats, of course: (1) you'd have to book a round-trip as two one-ways (which Skiplagged handles automatically), (2) you can only have carry-ons, and (3) you may be breaking an agreement with the airlines known as contract of carriage, where it might say you can't miss flights on purpose.

While Skiplagged is aimed at being a traveller's best friend and does more than inform about hidden-city opportunities, hidden-city is what it became known for. In fact, many people even refer to missing flights on purpose as "skiplagging". United Airlines didn't like any of this.

Around September of last year, United reached out trying to get me to stop. I refused to comply because of their sheer arrogance and deceitfulness. For example, United tried to use the contract of carriage. They insisted Skiplagged, a site that provides information, was violating the contract. Contract of carriage is an agreement between passengers and airlines...Skiplagged is neither. This was basically the case of a big corporation trying to get what they want, irrelevant of the laws.

Fast-forward two months to Nov 2014, United teamed up with another big corporation and filed a federal lawsuit. I actually found out I was being sued from a Bloomberg reporter, who reached out asking for my thoughts. As a 22 year old being told there's a federal lawsuit against me by multi-billion dollar corporations, my heart immediately sank. But then I remembered, I'm 22. At worst, I'll be bankrupt. In my gut, I believed educating consumers is good for society so I decided this was a fight worth having. They sent over a letter shortly asking me to capitulate. I refused.

Skiplagged was a self-funded side project so I had no idea how I was going to fund a litigation. To start somewhere, I created a GoFundMe page for people to join me in the fight. What was happening in the following weeks was amazing. First there was coverage from small news websites. Then cbs reached out asking me to be on national tv. Then cnn reached out and published an article. Overnight, my story started going viral worldwide like frontpage of reddit and trending on facebook. Then I was asked to go on more national tv, local tv, radio stations, etc. Newspapers all over the world started picking this up. United caused the streisand effect. Tens of millions of people now heard about what they're doing. This was so nerve-wracking! Luckily, people understood what I was doing and there was support from all directions.

Fast-forward a couple of months, United's partner in the lawsuit dropped. Fast-forward a few more months to May 2015, a federal judge dropped the lawsuit completely. Victory? Sort of I guess. While now there's no lawsuit against Skiplagged, this is America so corporations like United can try again.

From running a business as an early twenties guy to being on national tv to getting sued by multi-billion dollar corporations to successfully crowdfunding, I managed to experience quite a bit. Given the support reddit had for me last year, I wanted to do this AMA to share my experience as a way of giving back to the community.

Also, I need your help.

The crowdfunding to fight the lawsuit led to donations of over $80,000. I promised to donate the excess, so in addition to your question feel free to suggest what charity Skiplagged should support with the remaining ~$23,000. Vote here. The top suggestions are:

  1. Corporate Angel Network - "Corporate Angel Network is the only charitable organization in the United States whose sole mission is to help cancer patients access the best possible treatment for their specific type of cancer by arranging free travel to treatment across the country using empty seats on corporate jets." http://www.corpangelnetwork.org/about/index.html

  2. 3. Miracle Flights for Kids - "the nation’s leading nonprofit health and welfare flight organization, providing financial assistance for medical flights so that seriously ill children may receive life-altering, life-saving medical care and second opinions from experts and specialists throughout the United States" http://www.miracleflights.org/

  4. Travelers Aid International - "While each member agency shares the core service of helping stranded travelers, many Travelers Aid agencies provide shelter for the homeless, transitional housing, job training, counseling, local transportation assistance and other programs to help people who encounter crises as they journey through life." http://www.travelersaid.org/mission.html

26. I’m Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak, Ask Me Anything!

Hi Reddit, I’m Steve Wozniak.

I will be participating in a Reddit AMA to answer any and all questions. I promise to answer all questions honestly, in totally open fashion, even when the answer is that I don’t have an answer to a specific question or that I don’t know enough to answer it.

I recently shot an interview with Reddit as part of their new series Formative, in which I talk about the early days of Apple. You can watch it here:

The founding of Apple is often greatly misunderstood. I like clearing the air about those times. I like to talk about my ideas for entrepreneurs with humble starts, like we had. I have always cared deeply about youth and education, whether in or out of school. I fought being changed by Apple’s success. I never sought wealth or power, and in fact evaded it. I was able to finish my degree in EE&CS and to fulfill a lifelong goal to teach 5th graders (8 years, up to teaching 7 days a week, public schools, no press allowed). I try to reach audiences of high school and college and slightly beyond people because of how important those times were in my own development. What I taught was less important than motivating students to learn. Nothing can stop them in that case.

I’m still a gadgeteer at heart. I buy a lot of prominent gadgets, including different platforms of computers and mobile devices, because everything different excites me. I think about what I like and dislike about such things. I think about the course technology has taken since early PC days and what that implies about the future. I think often about possible negative aspects of what we’ve brought to the world. I try to develop totally independent ideas about a lot of things that are never heard in other places. That was my design style too.

I admire good engineers and teachers greatly, even though they are not treated as royalty or paid a fraction of other professions. I try to be a very middle level person and to live my life around normal fun people. I do many things to affect that I don’t consider myself more important than anyone else. I had my lifetime philosophies down by around age 20 and I am thankful for them. I never needed something like Apple to be happy.

Finally, I’m hosting the Silicon Valley Comic Con this weekend March 18 - 19th, so come check it out. You can buy tickets here.

I'd like to thank everyone who came in with questions for this AMA. It was delightful to hear the questions and answer them, but I also enjoyed hearing all your little screen names. Some of those I wanted to comment on being very creative. I always like things that have a little bit of humor and fun and entertainment built into the productivity work of our lives.

27. Hey Reddit! I'm "Parks and Recreation" alum Jim O'Heir, who you probably know better as Jerry/Terry/Larry Gergich. Today, my film "Middle Man" is finally opening in theaters across the country!

Hey Everyone. I'm back to answer some more questions and to let you know that I'm involved in a campaign to sell some #DammitJerry t'shirts/hoodies/mugs to support the #TuberousSclerosisAlliance. This organization helps children born with tumors on their organs who very sadly end up having numerous seizures throughout the day for most of their lives. It's a wonderful group of people and I'm always happy to do anything I can to help this awesome cause. Please go to www.Represent.com/Jim and get your #DammitJerry swag. :) Now, bring on the questions. :)

Well, I've gotta get ready for my FB Live with Josh McDermott. We'll be live at 3PM PST. Please check us out and ask whatever questions you might have. I'll also be with Andrew J. West at the Laemmle's on Wilshire in Beverly Hills at 7:30pm for the screening of Middle Man. Go to their website for tix. We'll be doing a Q&A after the film.

I want to thank you all for taking the time to either ask questions or check out the answers. I love doing these kind of things. I think they're much more revealing than your average interview. REDDIT is one of the greatest places for information about ... anything. Literally anything.

I'm heading to Boston tomorrow to go to the 7:30pm screening of Middle Man at the Boston Common 19 on Tremont Street. I'll also by in NYC on Tuesday at the Empire Theater on 42nd to meet people at the 7:30pm (I think...if not around that time) where we'll also be doing a Q&A with me and director Ned Crowley.

Please check me out on The Late Late Show with Seth Meyers next Wednesday, the 14th. Seth is one of the really good guys. I love being on his show.

Again, thank you for all the great questions and taking the time out to spend with me. I'm forever astounded and grateful for the love I'm shown every day.

xoxoxo Jim

EDIT 1: Hey everyone. I have to do a phone interview at 11 PST. I'll be back after we hang up. In the mean time check out the trailer for Middle Man. I promise you a thrilling, dark, funny ride with this film:

Hey Reddit! Thank you for having me back! I think this is going to be my third AMA, so the answers should hopefully come a little faster this time. I have a new independent film called "Middle Man" which is opening in theaters today. It's a super dark comedy that I'm extremely proud of. It's been on the festival circuit (and has done very well!) so I'm sure a few people here may have already seen it. If so, no spoilers! Lol.

In the film, I play a comedian named Lenny. When Lenny's mother suddenly dies, he quits his job and heads to Vegas in search of fame. He picks up a mysterious hitchhiker who lures him into a desert-town killing spree with dark and twisted result – as the bodies pile up, Lenny actually becomes funnier and funnier.

Here's a link to the trailer. I hope you like it! http://www.middlemanmovie.com/trailer-1/

Here's me and my doggos for "proof" http://imgur.com/a/4Ti7B

I will be back in about two hours to answer your questions. Thanks Reddit!

37. I'm Captain Disillusion, the titular hero of (and shy filmmaker behind) the YouTube web series that deconstructs Internet video weirdness. Ask me any-things.

I've been making videos on my channel (http://www.youtube.com/CaptainDisillusion) since 2007. They've crawled up to the Reddit front page a couple of times (thanks!). Recently, Patreon has made it possible for me to turn the production of Captain D into a full-time job. Just barely.

I like filmmaking, visual effects, animation, science and skepticism. And challenging as it is, I love making the series monthly. Sometimes I get things a little wrong, and sometimes I'm not funny in the way I intended to be, but I always learn as a result. I'd like to continue making the show bigger and better, faster and hotter.

If you want to help out or are interested in getting a behind-the-scenes peek at the process, consider patronizing here: http://www.patreon.com/CaptainDisillusion

Also, someone has made a Captain D subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/CaptainDisillusion/

I don't run it, but check it once in a while. Could be a good place to submit potential videos for me to examine in future episodes!

EDIT: Thank you for the cool questions! You made me think about myself more than I'm normally comfortable with. But now I'm afraid it's time for me to go, Reddit. A reply thread under a political Tweet is only 3 posts away from creating a logical fallacy singularity. Remember: love with your heart; use your head for everything else... CAPTAIN D I S I L L U S I O N!

39. 18 months ago I didn’t know how to code, I’m now a self-taught programmer who’s made apps for the NBA, NHL, and schools like Purdue, Notre Dame, Alabama and Clemson. I’m now releasing my software under the MIT license for anyone’s use — AMA!

My short bio: While working for a minor league hockey team, I had an idea for an app but didn’t know how to code, and I couldn’t afford to pay someone to program it for me. Rather than give up, I bought four books from Amazon and spent the next few months learning how. A few months later, some of the hockey sales staff teamed up with me to get our prototype off the ground and together we now operate a small software company.

The idea was to create a crowd-sourced light show by synchronizing smartphone flashlights you see at concerts to the beat of the music. You can check out a video of one of our light shows here at the Villanova-Purdue men’s basketball game two months ago. Basically, it works by using high-pitched, inaudible sound waves in a similar way that Bluetooth uses electromagnetic waves. All the devices in this video are getting their instructions from the music and could be in airplane mode. This means that the software can even be used to relay data to or synchronize devices through your television or computer. Possible uses range from making movies interactive with your smartphone, to turning your $10 speaker into an iBeacon (interactive video if you’re watching on a laptop).

If you’re interested in using this in your own apps, or are curious and want to read more, check out a detailed description of the app software here.

Overall, I’ve been very lucky with how everything has turned out so far and wanted to share my experience in the hopes that it might help others who are looking to make their ideas a reality.

41. We are the investigative journalists who worked on the Panama Papers AMA!

Hello Reddit,

over a year ago, an anonymous source contacted the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) and submitted encrypted internal documents from Mossack Fonseca, a Panamanian law firm that sells anonymous offshore companies around the world.

Ultimately, SZ acquired about 2.6 terabytes of data, making the leak the biggest that journalists had ever worked with. The source wanted neither financial compensation nor anything else in return, apart from a few security measures. The Süddeutsche Zeitung decided to analyze the data in cooperation with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). In the past 12 months, around 400 journalists from more than 100 media organizations in over 80 countries have taken part in researching the documents.

We are three of them, and very happy to finally be able to talk about the work we did in the last year!

EDIT: Frederik has to leave now but Bastian and Vanessa are still here to answer your questions!

EDIT 2: That was awesome! Now we have to go and eat pizza. Thank you for all these amazing questions, that was a lot of fun! We are going to check this subreddit again tomorrow, if we oversaw any major aspect we are going to figure out a way to reply on it later.

Hello reddit. It’s me: your absentee leader. This is my first time here, so I’d appreciate it if you’d be gentle… Just kidding. Go right ahead and throw all your randomness at me. I can take it.

Also, I'd be remiss if I didn’t mention my new film, The Judge, is in theaters THIS FRIDAY. Hope y’all can check it out. It’s a pretty special film, if I do say so myself.

Here’s a brand new clip we just released where I face off with the formidable Billy Bob Thornton: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/thejudge/.

Feel free to creep on me with social media too:

Victoria's helping me out today. AMA.

Edit: This was fun. And incidentally, thank you for showing up for me. It would've been really sad, and weird, if I'd done an Ask Me Anything and nobody had anything to ask. As usual, I'm grateful, and trust me - if you're looking for an outstanding piece of entertainment, I won't steer ya wrong. Please see The Judge this weekend.

46. Hi guys! It’s Gordon Ramsay, back for another AMA, this time from London! There's a lot of exciting things happening in 2016, new restaurants, a mobile game…...so Ask Me Anything! And for my American fans, try not to overcook your burgers next weekend!

I'm an award-winning chef and restaurateur with 30 restaurants worldwide. Also known for presenting television programs, including Hell's Kitchen, MasterChef, MasterChef Junior, and Hotel Hell.

I just launched my very first mobile game #GordonRamsayDASH where you get to build your very own restaurant empire, with yours truly as your guide!! It’s available now for download on the App store and Google Play. I hope everyone has as much fun playing as we did making it!

Hi guys, just a quick apology for the ones I couldn't answer! I love doing this kind of stuff because that's how I am! I'd love to go live with you guys 7 days a week, my issue is time, I need one more day a week and 4 more hours in my 24 hours! I promise somewhere along the line I will get those questions answered. In the meantime, please, promise me one thing; Donald Trump will not be running America!

48. I found my kidnapped friends in China, and am now finishing a documentary on it - AMA!

I'm a filmmaker and human rights activist. 5 years ago, 3 of my friends were kidnapped from Vietnam and trafficked into China. My friends were "lucky" - they were forced into marriage, not prostitution. They were 16 years old.

After just a few months, one of my friends took her "husband's" phone and ran away. She was brought home safely. My other 2 friends just disappeared. I didn't know where they were, what had happened to them, or even if they were still alive.

I gave up everything to investigate my friends' disappearances, and risked my life to try and find them in China - the world's most populous country, with over 1.357 billion people (more than 4x the population of the US!). After 5 months of searching, to everyone's surprise, I actually did find them.

It was more than I'd ever hoped for - but that was just the beginning. By the time I found them, each of my 2 friends had given birth in China, and had to make a decision no mother should ever have to make: the choice between her child and her own freedom.

I'm now sharing my friends' story as a documentary to raise awareness of the global human trafficking crisis, and to help protect vulnerable girls in Vietnam.

PROOF: You can find proof (and more information) on the front page of my website at http://www.humanearth.net

We're running a crowdfunding project to finish the documentary here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sisters-for-sale-a-human-trafficking-documentary/

EDIT: I can't even remember how many hours we've been here - is it 3? 4? - but my mind is melting. I'll answer a couple more questions then wrap it up. You've been wonderful - thank you for all your great questions, your upvotes, and all the support you've given - it really makes a difference. If you haven't checked out the documentary, it's available until the weekend, when our fundraising campaign ends: http://www.sistersforsale.com

For those of you who still have questions, you'll find plenty of information on my blog - Oct/Nov 2014, June 2015 and Oct 2016 may be of particular interest: http://www.humanearth.net/blog/history/

50. We developed a Chrome Plugin that overlays lower textbook prices directly on the bookstore website despite legal threats from Follett, the nation's largest college bookstore operator. AMA

We developed OccupyTheBookstore.com, a Chrome Plugin which overlays competitive market prices for textbooks directly on the college bookstore website. This allows students to easily compare prices from services like Amazon and Chegg instead of being forced into the inflated bookstore markup. Though students are increasingly aware of third-party options, many are still dependent on the campus bookstore because they control the information for which textbooks are required by course.

Here's a GIF of it in action.

We've been asked to remove the extension by Follett, a $2.7 billion company that services over 1700+ college bookstores. Instead of complying, we rebuilt the extension from the ground up and re-branded it as #OccupyTheBookstore, as the user is literally occupying their website to find cheaper deals.

Ask us anything about the textbook industry, the lack of legal basis for Follett's threats, etc., and if you're a college student, be sure to try out the extension for yourself!

Proof: http://OccupyTheBookstore.com/reddit.html

Wow, lots of great interest and questions. Two quick hits:

1) This is a Texts.com side project that makes use of our core API. If you are a college student and would like to build something yourself, hit up our lead dev at Ben@Texts.com, or PM /u/bhalp1 or tweet to him @BHalp1

2) If you'd like some free #OccupyTheBookstore stickers, click this form.

Wow, this is really an overwhelming and awesome amount of support and interest.

54. IamA 89 year old german WW2 veteran who got drafted into the army in the last months of war and subsequently became a prisoner of war in the UdSSR for 4 ½ years. AmaA

Hey Reddit,

We’re sitting here with our Opa for the next two or three hours to hopefully answer some questions from you about his time during and around the second world war.

We asked him to do this AmaA because for us it is very important to archieve the important experiences from that time and to not forget what has happened. He is a very active man, still doing some hunting (in his backyard), shooting game and being active in the garden. After our grandmother died in 2005, he picked up cooking, doing a course for cooking with venison (his venison cevapcici and venison meat cut into strips are super delicious) and started to do some crafting.

Our Opa was born in 1927 in a tiny village in Lower Saxony near the border to North-Rhine-Westphalia. He was a Luftwaffe auxiliary personnel in Osnabrück with 14/15 years for 9 months and helped during the air raids against Osnabrück at that time.

Afterwards he had 3 months of Arbeitsdienst (Labour Service) near the city of Rheine. Following that at the end of December 1944 he was drafted in as a soldier. He applied to be a candidate reserve officer which meant that he was not send to the front line immediately. He came to the Ruhr area for training and was then transferred to Czechoslovakia for further training. His life as a soldier lasted for half a year after which he was caught and send to Romania and then to Rostov-on-Don for four and a half years as a prisoner of war. During that time he worked in a factory and he had to take part in political education in a city called Taganrog where they were educated on the benefits of communism and stalinism. They had to sign a paper that they would support communism when they would go back home.

He came back home in 1949 and went to an agricultural school. During his time on the farm where he was in training, he met our grandmother. They married in 1957 despite her mother not being happy about the marriage. He didn’t have enough farmland, in her opinion. They had six kids, including our mother, and nowadays 13 grandchildren.

Please be respectul!

56. My best friend and I quit our jobs, raised $17,656, and worked 3 years to make our dream game! Ruin of the Reckless released on April 26th! AMA!

EDIT: Hello everyone! We are packing things up. I believe we actually successfully answered almost every single question between me and Danny! Sorry if we missed yours! Thank you all for the support and for throwing some light on the game. We will do our best to support the game in every way we can and live up to your expectations! We're out, thank you!

Hello. My name is Charles Webb. Three years ago, while working IT for a small software company and binge playing Samurai-Gunn with my closest friends in much of my off time, I started working with one of them (Daniel Crockenberg.) Inspired by the wonderfully crafted combat mechanics of Samurai Gunn, we set out to make a punchy, fast paced dungeon-crawler with the depth and complexity of a fighting game!

Over time the community around the game grew enthusiastic enough that we decided we had to take the chance. We quit our jobs and began working on it full time. (Note: This is certainly usually a very bad idea!)

We decided to call the game 'Ruin of the Reckless', mostly as a reference to our sorry financial situation and the foolishness of our decision to make it. Hehe, get it!?

About two years later, we planned and launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds necessary to complete the game 'for real.' It was successful, largely due to the strength of our playable 'Backers Only' Build, which became popular with streamers like Tietuesday.

Edit: We've gotten a lot of questions about this whole thing specifically so I want to put this in OP for more clarity...

"Sorry, there is a slight lack of clarity in my post here. We worked on the game for about 2 years part-time BEFORE the Kickstarter. After the Kickstarter we worked for about 7 months before the game was released. ALL of our living expenses were paid out of our own finances/savings, Kickstarter money was only spent on game assets, contractor fees, etc... We certainly didn't live for that entire time without any income!"

Since then it has been non-stop work up to today putting the game together for our backers and the community at large. Over the course of development we have been through Steam Greenlight, conducted a successful Kickstarter campaign, been featured on several popular streams and youtube channels (including Tietuesday, DreadedCone, and TotalBiscuits wildly popular Co-Optional Podcast), met with major publishers, built a humble following of almost 2000 indie die-hards on twitter, signed on to and maintained contracts with almost 20 artists and musicians, been featured on many indie-gaming and videogaming news sites including Co-Optimus and well, a LOT of other stuff! It has really been quite a ride to get to this point!

I am also very proud and excited to say that we were recently accepted by GOG.com and will be included in to their curated store. To me this is a great honor and a validation of all of the hard work we have put in so far!

On release day we were featured on the front page of gog.com as well as the front page of the itch.io store. It remains to be seen whether we can crack the top sellers list on Steam but i'm crossing my fingers! We spent the first day on and near the top of the popular new releases page on Steam so release has gone well so far! (proof: https://twitter.com/FauxOperative/status/857426940889767936)

Edit: Uhh... We're on the front page of reddit right now! I didn't really expect that. I hope I can still get to everyone's questions! I will do my best!

FyrFoot is my dev partner and he's going to step in and start answering questions too.

Edit: Hi guys, I did my best but uh... there is simply no way I can answer every single question any more. My inbox is growing significantly faster than I can answer them but I will be digging through the bottom and answering as many as I can.

57. Just days left to kill mass surveillance under Section 215 of the Patriot Act. We are Edward Snowden and the ACLU’s Jameel Jaffer. AUA.

Our fight to rein in the surveillance state got a shot in the arm on May 7 when a federal appeals court ruled the NSA’s mass call-tracking program, the first program to be revealed by Edward Snowden, to be illegal. A poll released by the ACLU this week shows that a majority of Americans from across the political spectrum are deeply concerned about government surveillance. Lawmakers need to respond.

The pressure is on Congress to do exactly that, because Section 215 of the Patriot Act is set to expire on June 1. Now is the time to tell our representatives that America wants its privacy back.

Senator Mitch McConnell has introduced a two-month extension of Section 215 – and the Senate has days left to vote on it. Urge Congress to let Section 215 die by:

Calling your senators: https://www.aclu.org/feature/end-government-mass-surveillance

From Ed: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/36ru89/just_days_left_to_kill_mass_surveillance_under/crgnaq9

Thank you all so much for the questions. I wish we had time to get around to all of them. For the people asking "what can we do," the TL;DR is to call your senators for the next two days and tell them to reject any extension or authorization of 215. No matter how the law is changed, it'll be the first significant restriction on the Intelligence Community since the 1970s -- but only if you help.

UPDATE 5:11pm EST: Edward Snowden is back on again for more questions. Ask him anything!

UPDATE 6:01pm EST: Thanks for joining the bonus round!

From Ed: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/36ru89/just_days_left_to_kill_mass_surveillance_under/crgt5q7

That's it for the bonus round. Thank you again for all of the questions, and seriously, if the idea that the government is keeping a running tab of the personal associations of everyone in the country based on your calling data, please call 1-920-END-4-215 and tell them "no exceptions," you are against any extension -- for any length of time -- of the unlawful Section 215 call records program. They've have two years to debate it and two court decisions declaring it illegal. It's time for reform.

61. [AMA Request] Soon to be former Vice President Joe Biden.

My 5 Questions:

  1. Not all Vice Presidents take on such an 'active' role in the governing process as you seemed to. Was that something you were specifically encouraged to do, or simply always intended to and it just worked out well?
  2. What would you consider your best, or perhaps most important, accomplishment in public service during your time as VP?
  3. Without sharing anything too personal or otherwise untoward, what was your most memorable 'private' moment with President Obama that had nothing to do with your respective offices?
  4. What sort of advice might you be able to give to those dealing with loss or tragedy in their own families, and if you are comfortable doing so, shed some light on how you dealt with it despite such public attention.
  5. Knowing what you know now and having a front row seat to the Office of the Presidency for 8 years...if given the chance to do it all again, would you still run for President yourself?

62. [AMA Request] A High Rank DEA Official

My 5 Questions:

  1. Why was CBD Oil ruled a Schedule 1 drug? Please be specific in your response, including cited sources and conclusive research that led you to believe CBD oil is as dangerous and deadly as heroin or meth.
  2. With more and more states legalizing marijuana / hemp, and with more and more proof that it has multiple medical benefits and a super low risk of dependency, why do you still enforce it as a schedule 1 drug?
  3. How do you see your agency enforcing federal marijuana laws once all 50 states have legalized both recreationally and medically, as the trend shows will happen soon?
  4. There is no evidence that anyone has died directly as a result of "overdosing" on marijuana - but yet alcohol kills thousands each year. Can you please explain this ruling using specific data and/or research as to why alcohol is ranked as less of a danger than marijuana?
  5. If hemp could in theory reduce our dependencies on foreign trade for various materials, including paper, medicine, and even fuel, why does your agency still rule it as a danger to society, when it has clearly been proven to be a benefit, both health-wise and economically?

EDIT: WOW! Front page in just over an hour. Thanks for the support guys. Keep upvoting!

EDIT 2: Many are throwing speculation that this is some sort of "karma whore" post - and that my questions are combative or loaded. I do have a genuine interest in speaking to someone with a brain in the DEA, because despite popular opinion, I'd like to think that someone would contribute answers to my questions. As for the "combativeness" - yes, I am quite frustrated with DEA policy on marijuana (I'm not a regular user at all, but I don't support their decision to keep it illegal - like virtually everyone else with a brainstem) but they are intended to get right to the root of the issue. Again, should someone come forward and do the AMA, you can ask whatever questions you like, these aren't the only questions they'll have to answer, just my top 5.

65. CISA, a privacy-invasive "cybersecurity" surveillance bill is back in Congress. We're the privacy activists trying to stop it. AMA

Hey Reddit,

The Senate may try to pass the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA) before its summer recess. The zombie bill is a dangerous surveillance bill drafted by the Senate Intelligence Committee that is nearly-identical to CISPA due to its broad immunity clauses for companies, vague definitions, and aggressive spying powers.

Can you help us stop it? AMA

Answering questions today are: JaycoxEFF, nadia_k, drewaccess, NathanDavidWhite, neema_aclu, fightforthefuture, evanfftf, and astepanovich.

Proof it's us: EFF, Access, ACLU, Fight for the Future

You can read about why the bill is dangerous here. You can also find out more in this detailed chart (.pdf) comparing CISA to other bad cybersecurity bills.

Read the actual bill text here.

Take Action:

Visit the Stop Cyber Spying coalition website where you can fax your Senators and tell them to vote no on CISA.

Use a new tool developed by Fight for the Future to fax your lawmakers from the Internet. We want to make sure they get the message.

Help us spread the word. After you’ve taken action, tweet out why CISA must be stopped with the hashtag #StopCISA. Use the hashtag #FaxBigBrother if you want to automatically send a fax to your Senator opposing CISA. If you have a blog, join us by publishing a blog post this week about why you oppose CISA, and help us spread the word about the action tools at https://stopcyberspying.com/.

For detailed analysis you can check out this blog post and this chart.

Edit 1: to add links.

Edit 2: Responding to the popular question: "Why does CISA keep returning?"

Especially with ever worse data breaches and cybersecurity problems, members of Congress are feeling pressure to take some action to help in the area. They want to be able to say they did something for cybersecurity, but lobbyists and the intelligence community are pushing bad bills like CISA. Surveillance defenders like Sen. Richard Burr are also using every procedural tool available to them to help move these bills quickly (like holding meetings to discuss the bill in secret). They'll keep doing it until we win overwhelmingly and make the bill toxic for good, like we did with SOPA. That's why it's important that everyone takes action and ownership of this fight. We know it's easy to feel frustrated, but it's incredibly important for people to know how much their calls, emails...and faxes in this case, really matter. Congress wants to focus on things people are paying attention to. It's our job to make sure they know people are paying attention to CISA. We couldn't do it without all of you.

Edit 3: The east coast organizations have signed off for the day, but will be checking in every now and then to answer questions. Nadia and I will continue through 6pm PT. Afterwards, all of us will be checking this post over the next few days trying to answer any remaining questions. Thanks for all the support!

66. [AMA Request] Person Wearing Shark Costume at Katy Perry's Super Bowl Halftime Show

My 5 Questions:

  1. Is this the craziest costume you've ever danced in?
  2. How was visibility in the shark costume?
  3. Seahawks or Patriots?
  4. How does one become a dancing shark in a super bowl halftime show?
  5. Would you rather fight one Katy Perry-sized duck or 100 duck-sized Katy Perrys?

Edit: Video of the Halftime show for anyone who didn't see it: [Bad link - Hasty update from mobile]

Edit 2: Looks like one of the sharks may have been Scott Myrick (http://instagram.com/scott_myrick/). Seeing if I can get him to come do an AMA. (Thanks u/frivolities)

Edit 3: Actual Link to Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EteHIXn8j4?t=4m33s

Edit 4: Other shark possibly located: http://instagram.com/bryangaw/ (Thanks u/holyfruits)

Edit 5: Tweets and messages sent. We'll see what we get. Sleep now.

Edit 6: Not sure I ever expected to be gifted Reddit Gold for anything and definitely not for a post about a giant dancing shark. Thanks u/nameless_username

67. IamA electronics repair technician hated by Apple that makes YouTube videos, AMA!

My short bio: I have a store in Manhattan. I teach component level electronics repair on youtube http://youtube.com/rossmanngroup which seems to be a dying art. I am currently fighting with the digital right to repair to try and get a bill passed that will allow all independent service centers access to manuals and parts required to do their jobs.

My Proof: https://www.rossmanngroup.com/started-iama-reddit-today-yes/

I am still replying to comments, but I am so far behind that I am still about ten pages down from new comments. I am doing my best to continue. If I drop off, I'll be back tomorrow around 12 PM. Still commenting now though, at 12 AM.

Ok, I cave... my hands are tired. I will be back at 12 PM tomorrow. It is my goal to answer every question. Even if it looks like I haven't gotten to yours, I will do my best to do all of them, but it is impossible to do in realtime, because you are asking faster than I can type. But thanks for joining!

EDIT 3: I lied, I stayed until 4:15 AM to answer... and now I will go to sleep for real, and be back at 12 PM.

EDIT 4 6/12 : I will be back later tonight to finish off answering questions. Feel free to keep posting, I will answer whatever I can later this evening.

68. [AMA Request] Ellen Pao; Current Reddit CEO

My 5 Questions:

  1. What do you intend to do to rectify the recent happenings?

  2. What direction do you intend to now take with Reddit as a whole entity?

  3. What was the motivation behind the sacking of Victoria?

  4. How do you intend to fill the job that she did and how will you work to fix what damage has been done?

  5. With the community threatening to leave (and already starting to) how do you intend to make us trust you and the rest of the Admins again? And how are you going to prove it to us?

Edit: Further discussion:

We haven't had a chance to hear your side of the story. You have stayed pretty silent since the news broke. The community is currently sinking with pitchforks in hand yet you stand by and watch from a distance. This isn't helping you case so we need explanations.

We've had people come forward telling us how wonderful Victoria was. And people come forward and tell use how hard it was to work with you. (Current AMA going on with a former Reddit employee and you firing him)

You need to answer questions and you need to explain yourself before you become a dinosaur to be left alone.

For Information on the whole ordeal look here:

AMA Request for the beloved Victoria is here:

This AMA request has had some weird things happen to it. The post dropped 14k upvotes without the % of upvotes changing. (Edit: 3k upvotes just disappeared)

  • Edit: Post was taken down by Mods because of lack of contact info. I've added the Twitter and her Reddit account. Anyone with any other contact info private message me it and I'll add it to the list. They've now un-hidden my post (Thanks to /u/flyryan)

  • Edit 2.0: So from reading the comments (I was asleep because I'm in England) this AMA Request had reached 15,000 upvotes at some point last night. It's now been dropped down to 4,400 upvotes. The same thing has happened to the Victoria AMA Request. If someone could explain why this has happened that would be great.

69. I was imprisoned for 10 years in a North Korean political prisoner camp. My name is Kang Cholhwan, AMA.

Hello Reddit, my name is Kang Chol-hwan. For ten years, I was a prisoner at Yodok political prison camp in North Korea. My family and I were sent there after my grandfather was accused of treason by the Kim regime.

Since escaping North Korea, I have become a journalist, author, and human rights activist. Currently I am the Executive Director of the North Korea Strategy Center, an NGO whose goal is to advocate for free media and press in North Korea. We target North Koreans directly by sending external media such as movies, documentaries, and dramas inside the country, usually through USBs.

This is my second time doing an AMA on Reddit. I really enjoyed the first AMA, and would like answer more of your questions about myself, NKSC, and North Korea.

To find out more about NKSC and our campaign to send thousands of USBs into North Korea, visit our facebook and website: https://www.facebook.com/NKSCFriends/ http://en.nksc.co.kr

I am here working with a few translators to help me answer questions. We will be here for at least two hours. Please, ask any questions you might have!

Edit (12:00 pm KST): Thank you all for participating! We are going to call it a day for now. I am sorry that I could not answer all of your questions today, but we plan to do another AMA in the future. If you have a question, hold on to it and ask it during the next AMA. I am looking forward to answering more.

Thank you!

72. I am Mike Rowe and I can't seem to hold a job. I've been fired over 300 time in the last 10 years. Currently, and somewhat surprisingly, I am hosting a new show for CNN called Somebody's Gotta Do It. AMA.

Hi reddit, I'm back!

photo proof

I spent the past decade traveling to all 50 states and introducing cable TV viewers to over 300 different jobs. My new CNN series, “Somebody’s Gotta Do It” airs Wednesdays at 9pm ET and introduces viewers to people who march to the beat of a different drum. This show is about passion, purpose, and occasionally, hobbies that get a little out of hand. I sang in the Baltimore opera and sold stuff in the middle of the night on QVC. I've made many mistakes. I currently use my skills from the home shopping days to auction C.R.A.P. (collectibles rare and precious) to benefit my foundation on MikeRoweWorks.com. I’m @MikeRoweWorks on Twitter and TheRealMikeRowe on Facebook.

Victoria's helping me out today via phone.

73. I am Bill Nye The Science Guy and CEO of The Planetary Society, I'm here with NASA's Chief Scientist Ellen Stofan and JPL's Europa Study Scientist Robert Pappalardo to talk about Europa—the moon of Jupiter with more liquid water than all the Earth's oceans combined. Ask Us Anything!

[Edit]: Oh how we wish we could stay and answer all of your questions. We had a lot of fun, but we all need to head off to talk about Europa later this afternoon on Capitol Hill (no livestream, unfortunately, but The Planetary Society will post a video).

Make sure to follow us on Twitter: @NASA, @EllenStofan, @TheScienceGuy, @exploreplanets, @CaseyDreier, & @NASAJPL if you have any additional Europa questions for Robert Pappalardo.

And go Europa!

Hey there, Reddit. We’re here to answer anything about Europa—the moon of Jupiter that probably has more liquid water than all the Earth’s oceans combined.

Europa also seems likely to have heat energy and nutrients. Combine those all together and you’re looking at a place that could be habitable for life at this very moment. It’s like having our own little goldilocks-zone exoplanet in our cosmic backyard.

We are:

  • Bill Nye, The Science Guy, and CEO of The Planetary Society
  • Dr. Ellen Stofan, NASA’s Chief Scientist
  • Dr. Robert Pappalardo, Europa Study Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory
  • Casey Dreier, Director of Advocacy for The Planetary Society

Why are we doing this? Fundamentally we all love Europa and the mysteries associated with it. What, if anything, can be found in the great oceans of Europa? How could NASA look for life? What would it mean to discover life or even to discover that there is no life there? These are compelling questions, and we’re talking about them today in a special event in D.C. We had such a strong response, we decided to talk about it on Reddit, too.

Some good Europa resources:

74. We're scientists on the NASA New Horizons team, which is at Pluto. Ask us anything about the mission & Pluto!

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft is at Pluto. After a decade-long journey through our solar system, New Horizons made its closest approach to Pluto Tuesday, about 7,750 miles above the surface -- making it the first-ever space mission to explore a world so far from Earth.

Answering your questions today are:

  • Curt Niebur, NASA Program Scientist
